Improve Pitching Velocity

Improving pitching velocity is a mystery to many players and does not happen overnight. This is why some baseball pitchers never reach their maximum potential. Little league coaches generally tell their pitchers to concentrate on throwing strikes but as a player advances, throwing strikes is not enough to make them successful.

Good Velocity Starts with Body Mechanics

Good Body mechanics are essential for increasing pitching velocity. Often times, baseball pitchers have issues with technique and form, hindering their ability to reach full potential. It is important for pitchers to build a strong and explosive foundation in the core and hips for strength, momentum, and balance to transfer power to the upper body.

We provide numerous exercises and drills for building core and hip strength using the Myosource Kinetic Bands. Performing these exercises 2-3 times a week while working at 100% will ignite the core muscles to contract faster, allowing the fast twitch muscles to generate more power. If the core is able to generate more power, it will be able to transfer that power through the shoulders and out through the arm to increase a baseball player's pitching velocity.

Training Drills Can Help Improve Pitching Velocity

Oblique Knee Up

The baseball player will put on the Myosource Kinetic Bands. As soon as they put the bands on and begin to move they will feel the resistance working through the hip flexors, glutes, and quads. Then the player will open their trunk, away from the back leg, by bringing the knee forward and pulling it to the right with both arms. The shoulder of the left arm should be by the chin with the head facing left and both arms stretching to the right. Next close the gap by pulling back and down with the arms, twisting the core and squeezing the oblique. Finally, the player will perform this exercise to the right for 30 seconds and to the left for 30 seconds while wearing the Myosource Kinetic Bands and then immediately repeated without the bands.

Crawling Pushup

While wearing the Myosource Kinetic Bands, the baseball player will get down into a pushup position with their feet staggered. The left knee should be bent, bringing the toes forward and away from the body. After performing a pushup with the feet still staggered, the baseball player will then crawl by taking a hop step to the right with the right knee up, out, and bent. Next, the baseball player will do a pushup on the right side and then crawl to the left. Continue alternating sides for 10-12 pushups. Perform this exercise with resistance bands and then immediately without.

The baseball player must stay low throughout the entire exercise. Staying low will help the player work for full range of motion.

Core Strength for Control and Balance

Pitching, hitting, and throwing velocity are all about a baseball player's body control, form, and technique. This exercise is great for developing body control and balance.

The baseball player will shift all of their weight to the left foot, while bringing both arms by their ears. They will then lean to the right, lifting their left hip and knee to the right as well. Next, the baseball player will stretch both arms up and to the right, bending at the waste and extending the left leg out straight. The idea is to get the left arm and the left leg up and out in a parallel position to the ground while standing on the right foot. Then the player will do 8-10 reps on each side with resistance bands and then immediately without.

The key in this exercise is for the baseball player to open up their chest. Do not drop the head, shoulders, or arms downward. Opening the chest is all about building core strength so that the muscles learn to contract and react quickly and explosively.
